How Long Does It Take a Child to Learn English? An Honest Answer

How Long Does It Take a Child to Learn English? An Honest Answer

"How long will it take?" is the first question parents ask. The honest answer depends on a few things you can see, and a little simple maths.

It depends on a few things

No honest school can promise a date. How fast a child learns depends on:

  • How often they have lessons. Regular lessons, every week, work much better than many lessons followed by long breaks. New words need to come back again and again before they stick.
  • How much they speak. A lesson where the child talks a lot moves them forward faster than one where they mostly listen or watch.
  • English outside lessons. Songs, cartoons and picture books in English, even a few minutes a day, help a lot. Parents do not need to speak English to help.
  • Age and starting point. Younger children often pick up sounds very naturally; older children often move faster through grammar and reading.

A little simple maths

Each Little Fluent level has a fixed number of lessons, so you can work out how long a level takes at your pace. For example:

  • Starters has 115 lessons: about 58 weeks with 2 lessons a week, or about 38 weeks with 3 a week.
  • Movers has 96 lessons: about 48 weeks with 2 lessons a week, or about 32 weeks with 3 a week.
  • Flyers and A2 Key have 96 lessons each, so about 48 weeks each with 2 lessons a week.

These are the lessons, not a promise about your child: some children need to repeat a little, and some move faster. The teacher may also change your child's level after the first lessons.

The most important thing

Keep going. Children who have lessons regularly, every week, for many months make steady progress. Short breaks are fine; long gaps slow everything down. A routine your child enjoys is worth more than a busy plan you cannot keep.
