How to Choose Online English Classes for Your Child

There are many online English schools and apps for children. Here are the questions that really matter before you sign up, and what to ask on a trial lesson.
Start with what your child needs
Some children need confidence to speak. Some need a clear path towards an exam. Some just need regular, happy practice. Think about this first, because it decides which kind of class fits.
The questions that matter
- How much will my child speak? In a good lesson for young children, the child does a lot of the talking. Ask how lessons are planned to make that happen.
- Is it live, with a real teacher? Apps can be good for practice, but a live teacher listens, answers and adapts.
- Is it one to one or a group? Groups can be fun for confident children; one-to-one lessons give a shy child room to speak.
- Is there a clear curriculum? You should be able to see the levels, the words and what your child will be able to do.
- Will my child have a regular teacher? Children open up with a teacher they know.
- What happens if we miss a lesson? Look for clear rules for cancelling and make-up lessons.
- Can I see progress? A good school shows you each lesson and what your child learned, not just a general "well done".
- How are teachers chosen? Ask about interviews, training and child-safety rules.
Use the trial lesson well
During a trial lesson, watch and listen. Does your child speak a lot? Does the teacher use your child's name, praise real effort and correct gently? Does your child want to come back? That last question often tells you the most.
