How to Practise English at Home With Your Child (Even If You Don’t Speak It)

Ten minutes a day can make a real difference. Simple, fun ways to bring English into family life, for any parent.

Little and often

Short, happy moments of English every day help more than one long session a week. Ten minutes after school, a song in the car or a story at bedtime is enough.

Ideas that work

  • Songs and rhymes. Children remember words in songs very easily. Sing along, even if you don't know all the words.
  • Picture books. Look at the pictures together and name what you see in English. Ask "Where's the dog?" and let your child point.
  • Cartoons in English. Choose short episodes made for young children, and watch some together.
  • Label the house. Put small labels on things at home: door, table, window. Say them when you use them.
  • Play "I can see". Take turns: "I can see something red!" and guess what it is.
  • Ask about the lesson. After each lesson, ask your child to teach you one new word. Children love being the teacher.

You don't need perfect English

Your interest matters more than your accent. If you don't know a word, look it up together. Praise effort, not only right answers, and never make English a test at home.

Use the family page

On your Little Fluent family page you can see what your child is learning, read the teacher's notes and open Practice & games, where your child can play with the words of their level between lessons.
