Why One-to-One English Lessons Work So Well for Children

Why One-to-One English Lessons Work So Well for Children

In a big class a child may say only a few sentences in a whole lesson. In a one-to-one lesson the child speaks, is heard and tries again, again and again. Here is why that matters.

Children learn a language by using it

Young children learn a new language much as they learned their first one: by hearing it, trying it out, being understood and trying again. Speaking time matters. So does a patient listener who answers, helps and praises.

In a group class, that time is shared. A shy child can easily say very little, and the teacher cannot hear every child's pronunciation or every small mistake. In a one-to-one lesson, all the attention is on one child. Every try is heard, and every success can be celebrated.

Shy children often gain the most

Many children understand more than they say. Speaking in front of classmates can feel risky, and a worried child speaks less. With one friendly teacher and no audience, children usually relax and speak more freely. Feeling safe to make mistakes is how children start to speak.

The lesson can follow your child

A one-to-one teacher can slow down, repeat, give an extra example or move on, depending on how your child is doing that day. A lively child can move around and play; a tired child can do something calmer. Nothing is wasted on waiting for others.

How Little Fluent lessons work

Every Little Fluent lesson is live and one to one, on video, with a real teacher: 25 minutes (20 minutes for our youngest learners, the Tiny Talkers). The teacher has a ready-made lesson plan for each lesson, so they can give all their attention to your child. When you book weekly times, we choose one teacher for all of them whenever we can, because children do best with a teacher they know.

Your family page shows every lesson, the teacher's notes and the words your child has said, so you can see the progress, not only hear about it.
